CATS to resume fare collection May 16

The Capital Area Transit System (CATS) will resume fare collection on Sunday, May 16th. The agency began waiving fares in April 2020 in response to the COVID-19 pandemic.

CATS has installed operator barriers in all vehicles and has taken precautions to ensure the continued safety of both its customers and operators.

“We take the health and safety of both our operators and the community seriously,” said CATS CEO Bill Deville. “We have waited to resume fare collection until we felt we could safely do so,” he continued.

Many agencies around the country initially waived fares as a protective measure at the onset of the pandemic. Most agencies have been able to implement safeguards to resume collection.

“While passenger fares do not comprise a large portion of our operating budget, we are also obligated to be fiscally responsible while we continue to connect customers to jobs and their community,” Deville stated.

Passenger fare is $1.75 per trip for most customers. A breakdown of the fare structure may be found at brcats.com or by calling 225.389.8282.
