CATS and Red Stick Project announce winners of Red Stick Bicentennial Art Contest
BATON ROUGE, (Oct.16, 2017) – The Capital Area Transit System (CATS) and The Red Stick Project are pleased to announce the winners of the Red Stick Bicentennial Art Contest. Baton Rouge youth from a diversity of schools including private, public, parochial, charter, and home schools were invited to participate. The contest celebrates 200 years of Baton Rouge’s history and future in public transportation and embraced ALL types of transportation. Participating schools included Magnolia Woods, Glen Oaks Park, Dufrocq, Baton Rouge Foreign Language Academic Immersion Magnet (FLAIM), Buchanan, Glasgow Middle, Sherwood Middle, Westdale Middle, McKinley Middle, Baton Rouge Magnet High, McKinley High, and Woodlawn High. Winning designs will be displayed in advertising spaces at bus shelters, on buses, and inside CATS buildings during the holiday season in celebration of the Baton Rouge Bicentennial. Public display of the kids’ work will help instill city pride in the participants as well as pride in their work. The winners are:
Elementary
1st place – Sofia Baia, 3rd grade, Buchanan
2nd place - Sitan Gao, 5th grade, Buchanan
3rd place - Youssef Ismaili, 2nd grade, BR FLAIM
Middle
1st place - Loren Myers, 8th grade, Westdale Middle
2nd place - Arabelle Betzwieser, 8th grade, Westdale Middle
3rd place - Katie Wang, 8th grade, Glasgow Middle
High
1st place - Breanna Russell, 9th grade, Woodlawn High
2nd place - Erica Huang, 12th grade, McKinley Senior High
3rd place - Selia Jindal, 11th grade, Baton Rouge Magnet High

Designs were created with STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts & Math) principles in mind and included one or more public transportation modes which have been used in Baton Rouge over the past or future 200 years. The winners were chosen by a panel from the Arts Council of Greater Baton Rouge. The contest was in collaboration with Arts Council of Greater Baton Rouge and Division of Fine Arts of East Baton Rouge Parish Schools.

The mission of the Red Stick Project is to restore pride, purpose and passion in Baton Rouge communities through the arts. The Red Stick Project recently produced a room of nostalgic murals, “Memory Lane,” at an assisted living facility for Alzheimer’s residents. Other public art include, “Starry Night Over Red Stick” at BREC; a series of French impressionistic murals on Harry Drive; “Wheat Fields in the Sun” on Van Gogh Ave.; a 3-D mural on Titian Ave.; military murals at a veterans’ shelter and more.
