Capital Area Transit System Announces 30-Day Fare Waiver Program to Support Baton Rouge Students During Transportation Emergency

August 22, 2023

Baton Rouge, LA- The Capital Area Transit System (CATS) is proud to announce a 30-Day Student Fare Waiver Program, aimed at providing crucial support to students and parents during the ongoing transportation emergency. Considering the transportation challenges faced by local schools, CATS is taking the initiative to ensure that students can continue their education without interruption.

As part of this program, CATS will waive fares for all East Baton Rouge students for a period of 30 days, from August 23, 2023, to September 22, 2023. In order to use the fare waiver, students will simply need to present their valid student IDs upon boarding. This program reflects CATS' unwavering commitment to the community, prioritizing education and student well-being.

Interim CEO Dwana Williams commented on the initiative, saying, "In times of crisis, it is our duty to step up and support our community. Our 30-Day Fare Waiver Program underscores CATS' dedication to the students and parents we serve. By ensuring that transportation challenges do not hinder education access, we are reinforcing our commitment to going the Extra Mile for the people of Baton Rouge."

While many middle school and high school students will be able to ride the bus on their own, it is important to note that CATS policies require a paying adult to accompany children under the age of 13.

To further assist students and their families, CATS has a Trip Planner tool on our website, www.brcats.com, making the journey to school stress-free.

CATS invites parents, students, and the entire community to take advantage of this vital program during the ongoing transportation emergency. In addition to helping students and parents, this program will help all Baton Rouge citizens by helping ease possible traffic congestion around schools during this crisis. This reduction in traffic can improve overall road safety and decrease travel times for all commuters.
