CATS encourages BRCVPA students to show how they "love Louisiana"

Baton Rouge, LA_ The Capital Area Transit System (CATS) is helping foster a love for Louisiana through artwork. CATS partnered with the Baton Rouge Center for Visual and Performing Arts (BRCVPA) in the fall inviting students to design posters utilizing Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Math (STEAM) principles to show how they love Louisiana and care for the environment.

“We are always looking for ways to introduce public transit to young people, and this was an innovative way not only to encourage creativity and shine a spotlight on the bright talent in our community, but also to increase awareness of the tangible ways that CATS is working to improve the environment,” said CATS CEO Bill Deville. “We take our social and environmental responsibility very seriously, and to that end, we have made a commitment to expand our fleet to include electric vehicles and all our diesel buses are clean diesel, which helps to improve air quality in the area.,” Deville continued.

A contest was held among BRCVPA students where school students, families, and the Baton Rouge community selected their favorite designs. The winner‘s artwork will be displayed on two CATS vehicles. The second place winner will have 10 shelter ads created featuring their design. All artwork submitted will be incorporated into ads displayed inside the CATS buses.

“The art-focused curriculum at BRCVPA integrates all aspects of learning in the development of the whole child,” said BRCVPA Principal Candice Hartley. She continued, “Through our partnership with CATS, students engaged in an authentic, real-world experience that generated school-wide excitement and enthusiasm! We are thankful for our stakeholders, as we collectively strive to build relationships that will enrich student learning, increase involvement in our community, and help students make the connection between education and real-life. As a result of this project, students now have a better understanding of their impact on the environment, and what they can do to Love Louisiana!”
