Capital Area Transit System Announces Partnership with Amalgamated Transit Union (ATU) 1546 to launch Joint Labor/Management Apprenticeship/Mentorship Operator Pilot Program

Baton Rouge, Louisiana – [February 8, 2024] Capital Area Transit System (CATS) is delighted to announce a groundbreaking partnership with the Amalgamated Transit Union 1546 (ATU) to introduce the Joint Labor/Management Apprenticeship/Mentorship Operator Pilot Program. This innovative initiative aims to elevate the skills and success of newly hired bus operators by pairing them with experienced mentors for a duration of six to 12 months.

The Joint Labor/Management Apprenticeship/Mentorship Operator Pilot Program, the first of its kind in Louisiana, is set to establish a new standard for excellence in employee development and support within the transit industry. By leveraging the expertise of ATU members, CATS seeks to pass down practical knowledge, skills, and techniques crucial for ensuring the continued success of transit operations in the region.

"This partnership represents a significant stride in our commitment to providing unparalleled service to our community," remarked Interim CEO, Theo Richards. "CATS is proud to lead the industry by investing in our employees, fostering their growth, and assisting them in building successful careers in transit."

Studies consistently highlight the substantial value and benefits of mentorship programs in the workplace. The Joint Labor/Management Apprenticeship/Mentorship Operator Pilot Program will create a nurturing environment for new bus operators to learn, grow, and enhance their skills, benefiting both the individual and the organization.

CATS aims to provide a supportive environment where newly hired bus operators can thrive and excel. This professional development opportunity will enable them to gain firsthand knowledge from experienced professionals, ultimately leading to increased proficiency and operational success. Once the pilot program is complete, the full initiative will be officially registered with the State of Louisiana.
